How Long Does It Take to Beat Totally Safe Moon Project?
Updated ยท 3 min read
A full run of Totally Safe Moon Project, from the garage to destroying the asteroid, takes most groups about 1 to 2 hours. Launch-week Steam reviews show roughly 1 to 3 hours on record, and a harder Chaos Mode gives you a reason to play a second time. It is a short game by design; the developers call it a game about "shared moments" and seeing how far you get together.
The evidence
| Source | Reported time |
|---|---|
| RealOutlawNico (German co-op group, YouTube) | "about an hour" for the whole game |
| Geeky Pastimes (four-player full clear, YouTube) | Roughly 30 minutes of video; the group estimated "half an hour" to "an hour and a half" counting their slow start |
| Steam reviews, launch week | Reviews show 0.9โ2.8 hours on record; one reviewer beat Chaos Mode in 1.6 hours after finishing the base game in the playtest |
| Steam discussion "Only 2 hours of gameplay ???" | A player asking for new maps or modes after finishing |
| Negative Steam reviews | "too short", "1 hour of gameplay with no replayability" |
So: plan for an evening with friends, not a week.
What makes a run longer
- Solo play. You haul every fence, car and house yourself.
- Fall damage. It is an optional setting; with it on, big falls knock you out and send you back to the ground.
- Weak upgrades. If you skip Gravity Gun levels you keep building with small pieces.
- Not using ziplines. Every trip back to the Upgrades computer is a long walk down and climb up.
- UFOs and asteroid rain. Both wreck parts of the tower; see UFOs and asteroid rain.
- Running out of oxygen in the final stretch because you did not buy enough Oxygen Totems.
The walkthrough and beginner guide cover how to avoid each of these.
Chaos Mode
The standard run is not the only option: RealOutlawNico's group pointed out a Chaos Mode and adjustable difficulty in the menu at the end of their run. Steam backs this up with the achievement "Difficulty? I'd like a little more" โ Finish the game in Chaos Mode, the rarest achievement in the game at about 2% of players.
What changes? The only first-hand description we found is from a Steam reviewer who had played the playtest and then beat Chaos Mode at launch: "love the chaos mode especially, as it adds on some 'side-quests'". Another called it a way of "making the game interesting for those who have already played". We have not been able to verify the exact list of Chaos Mode changes, so we will not guess.
Settings that change the challenge
- Fall Damage โ a setting. Finishing with it enabled earns Not Afraid. Several groups turned it on for laughs.
- Difficulty โ mentioned as adjustable in RealOutlawNico's run; details not confirmed.
Can you save mid-run?
We could not confirm a save feature for an in-progress tower. A streamer who stopped halfway said "this sucks we can't save the progress", but this is a single report, and Steam does list Steam Cloud support. Until the developers clarify, plan to finish a run in one sitting.
Replay value and 100%
After the ending there is still plenty left for completionists: Chaos Mode, the golden bucket, hidden challenges like attaching a house to a tree, and AFK achievements. Our achievements guide lists all 44. For the full verdict on whether a short game is worth $5.99, see the review roundup.
